Mr. Cristol is the writer of the forthcoming The Liberty Incident.

At that place has never been a treaty between Israel and the United States. Both countries have shared values and a passion for commonwealth. While in 2002 Israel is a defacto marry of the U.S., the official U.S. government position is that there is a"special human relationship" betwixt State of israel and the United States. Those who refer to Israel as an ally of the United States in 1967 are guilty of an anachronism and brandish a lack of knowledge of history.

When the concept of Zionism and establishment of a homeland for the Jewish people was developing in Europe at the end of the 19th century, the idea was not initially popular with the majority of American Jews.

Following Globe War I, the Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917 was a product of efforts by President Woodrow Wilson at the urging of Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. At that time, support for a Jewish country by the United states of america and American Jews was non popular.

Post-obit World War Two and the Holocaust, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 181 on Nov 29, 1947, which devised a programme to segmentation the British mandate of Palestine. The Jewish community of Palestine accepted the plan, just the Arabs rejected information technology. Britain withdrew from mandatory Palestine on May xiv, 1948, and Israel declared itself a State. Upon Israel's declaration of statehood, both the United States and the Soviet Union immediately recognized the state of Israel.

President Harry Truman, with the urging of his executive banana, Clark Clifford, acted because he felt"information technology was the right matter to do." The Soviet motive was less donating. Because the government of Israel was controlled past the Labor Party, the Soviets believed Israel would become part of the Soviet Bloc and provide a Soviet entree into the Heart East. Israel chose the West and the Soviets were disappointed. The Soviets then courted favor with Arab countries and developed a hostile position to Israel.

Although the Us immediately recognized Israel, it also strictly enforced the Neutrality Act which prohibited the sale or transfer of any military weapons to Israel. The 1948 War of Independence established the land of State of israel. No official aid was provided by the Us. For the first 17 years of its existence, Israel did not receive any military or economical aid from the United states regime. In 1948, individual U.South. citizens attempted to send artillery to Israel in violation of the Neutrality Human activity. Some efforts were successful. Some efforts failed and individuals were prosecuted in federal courts. Some were treated sternly, and others were treated more than sympathetically. (The outset U.Southward. military machine weapons sold to Israel past the U.Due south. authorities were a few defensive Hawk antiaircraft missile batteries in 1964.)

Withal, in the late 1940s, the majority of American Jews were not in favor of a Jewish state in Palestine.Israel shopped for arms effectually the earth and acquired a varied inventory of military hardware. During this time frame, French republic was fighting Arabs in People's democratic republic of algeria and thus, co-ordinate to the ancient Middle Eastward adage,"The enemy of my enemy is my friend," France became Israel's friend and primary supplier of military hardware.

State of israel bought jet fighters from France. Starting time the Ouragan, and then Mysteres, Vatours, Super Mysteres, and finally, the Mirage IIIC, which the French manufacturer Desault developed in cooperation with Israel and with the loan of Israel's chief test pilot, Colonel Danny Shapira.

In 1956, President Nasser of Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal and closed the Strait of Tiran. Israel joined England and France in operation Musketeer, a military activeness which swiftly captured the Sinai and the Suez Canal.

Post-obit their military success, England, France, and Israel were coerced to withdraw from the canal and the Sinai by the United States under the policy of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Secretarial assistant of State John Foster Dulles.

At this betoken, the relationship betwixt the U.Due south. and Israel became strained and cold.

The Israelis connected to rely on their French military arms supplier until the 1960s, when Charles de Gaulle came to ability. De Gaulle fabricated peace with the Arabs and gave upwardly the French claim to Algeria. DeGaulle and so began to mend fences with the Arabs and the start victim of this new reality was the French-Israel connection.

Past 1966, Israel had purchased and taken delivery of 76 Mirage IIIC jet shipping and had purchased and paid for l more than. DeGaulle refused to deliver the l additional jets and he also refused to refund the purchase toll, which State of israel had paid in full. France likewise constructed some missile boats for Israel at the Port of Cherbourg for which Israel had also paid in total. DeGaulle refused to deliver the boats merely they ultimately institute their way to Israel by fashion of an incredible Israeli intelligence caper. (That fascinating story is told in The Boats of Cherbourg by Abraham Rabinovich.)

At this point in the mid-1960s, an interesting event occurred. The Israeli Mossad sent an American female amanuensis to Iraq where she cultivated a romance with Munir Redfa, an Iraqi jet fighter pilot who had been trained both in the United States and the Soviet Union. The pilot, a Christian Arab, was married and had ii children. The agent lured him to Paris. When they arrived, the eager prospective lover was told,"This is not about sex. If you would similar a handsome sum of money and your family out of Republic of iraq, accept this ticket and false passport and wing to Tel Aviv. Otherwise, y'all may fly dorsum to Iraq."

The Iraqi pilot made the trip to Tel Aviv and ultimately his family left Iraq. Then, on a lovely clear mean solar day, he flew an Iraqi Air Strength MiG-21 to Israel, where the family unit was reunited and he got his handsome amount of dollars.

In 1966, the MiG-21 was the Soviet outset line jet fighter and no Western state had been able to get near one.

While the official U.S.-Israeli relationship had been beginning indifferent from 1948 until 1956, and and then cold from 1956 into the 1960s, i slender strand of cooperation had remained intact. During World State of war II, Palestinian Jews had cooperated with the Part of Strategic Services (OSS) in the fight against Nazi Germany. Following WWII, the OSS became the Fundamental Intelligence Bureau (CIA). The U.S. Main of Counter Intelligence, James Jesus Angelton, developed, maintained, and nurtured a symbiotic relationship between the CIA and those Palestinian Jews who evolved into the Israeli Mossad.

The Israelis assigned Colonel Danny Shapira to written report the MiG-21 and after a short fourth dimension, they turned it over to the United States Central Intelligence Bureau. (Danny Shapira trained a U.S. Air Force F-111 Test Airplane pilot, Lt. Joe Jordan to fly information technology and the MiG-21 was sent to the U.s.a. where it spent a lot of time in an Aggressor Squadron at a U.Southward. Air Force Base of operations in Nevada.)

Needless to say, the CIA and the U.South. Air Force were delighted with access to the Soviet's first line fighter and the chill of the Eisenhower/Dulles years began to thaw.

Following the turning over of the MiG-21, President Johnson invited Prime Minister Levi Eshkol to his ranch in Texas and Eshkol arrived with a long shopping list. He left with promises of future U.Southward. military supplies, including A-4 assail shipping. Although the U.S. military hardware did not go far in time for the 1967 war, information technology ultimately replaced the French source for military hardware and the U.South.-Israel special relationship became closer and warmer.

In 1967, Israel was threatened with destruction by Egypt, Syrian arab republic, Jordan, Iraq, and other Arab countries and the June 1967 state of war occurred. An excellent account of this state of war, ordinarily called the"Half-dozen Solar day War," was recently published by Michael Oren - Six Days of War (Oxford Press, 2002). Prior to the Six Day War, the continued existence of State of israel was in doubtfulness. The U.S. human relationship was becoming warmer just at all-time the U.S. was a friendly neutral. Dean Rusk said that being neutral was not an expression of indifference, but State of israel was non an ally. At the outbreak of the Vi Twenty-four hour period War, State Department Spokesman Robert McClosky announced on behalf of the United States:"Our position [on the war] is neutral in thought, word, and human activity."

Following State of israel's stunning victory in the Half dozen Day State of war, a euphoria set in effectually the world and strong support for the land of Israel developed in the United States. American public opinion swung dramatically in favor of Israel and for the starting time time in history, a majority of American Jews became Zionists, that is they supported the concept of a Jewish land.

From 1967 forrard, the special human relationship between the United States and Israel developed and grew. Information technology has had its ups and downs on the political level as U.Southward. national interests, especially the need for oil, make it expedient for the U.South. Authorities to court favor with various Arab states, but the human relationship remained relatively abiding and strong at both the war machine and intelligence levels.

Israel did not retaliate against Iraq during the Gulf War when Iraq launched SCUD missiles at Israeli cities. The exercise of this restraint by Israel preserved the coalition of Arab states created past the U.s. to drive the Iraqis out of Kuwait. This restraint was appreciated past the U.Due south.

State of israel has voted with the U.Due south. at the Un about 88 per centum of the time, more often than whatsoever other nation and the U.Southward. has commonly protected Israel from hostile Security Council Resolutions by the exercise of its veto. Recent polls confirm that the special relationship between the United States and Israel remains strong.

Hey jey,
I more affair now that your identity is revealed.
Have your ever writen a paper On the Stern Grouping and there wonderful founder? The original Terrorist in Isreal who I'm sure a lesson or ii were picked up by Palestinian freedom fighters. (don't become cought up in semantics with me, from college theses to something yous scribbled on toilet paper while taking a shat.)

pre-1950 non american co-operstion. Bullshat. Here is an
excerpt from Colliers encyclopedia 1947.
"The situation was aggravated by the support which the two contending parties institute outside Palestine. The Jewish demand was supported by very many Zionists in many lands, particularly in the Us, from where much of the Zionist leadership and a very corking part of the Zionist funds came."
There was also a scandle were several american zionist jews and American companys were charged for illegally directing arms to Isreal out empathy few were prosecuted
and although some plant guilty punishment was footling. Next signal. After earth war 11 America(the least affected by the ravage of WWll) controlled policy in Western Europe. Artillery past French republic to Isreal were under Us approval though non addmitted (alla Olie North). If French republic wanted to sell arms to lets say Republic of cuba how would The America Gov't have reacted. Do I need to mention other American regime deportment were they reserved "Plausible deniability".
To this day charitable contributions made past American citizens end upwards in the hands of the zionist Government.
A violation of American law. And to top information technology all off they are taxation deductible.
You started the commodity with "Both countries have shared values and a passion for democracy". Likening it to american demoracy. Is that with the inclusion of pre civil state of war American democracy? Or maybe just 1965(Ceremonious Rights Bill) Or how nearly pre-affirmative action? Looks to me more similar pre 1865. Palestinians enjoy a 50% unemployment rate. And the but Isreali sorrow of a Palestinian leaving palestine is "in that location goes more cheap labor". You must be a Zionist? Taking up media space and distoring to truth. Is George Orwells 1984 required reading in hebrew school. here is quote from the book. "He who controls the past controls the future". The problem is this your not the starting time people to try to manipulate public opinoin thru propaganda remember those Germens in the 1930's. I can't remember What were they chosen. They were every bit much the master race equally zionists are the choosen ones" Long term success none! The behavior of the Zioinist in Isreal might just lead to the next Jew tragedy. In 1945 there was one nuclear power, then there were two, know even Pakistan has 1! What will Isreal do when the applied science is more common identify and one of its Enemy's Detonates one in Tel-Aviv? Drag us all to WWlll.
I don't mind Zionists who need to drag at that place people to a tragedy every couple hundred years for a few foursquare miles in the desert, Just when hit hits american soil! i.e. 9/11.

Does Mr. Cristol accept a get-go name?

On the website promoting Cristol'southward book "The Liberty Incident"

http://world wide web.thelibertyincident.com/articles.htm

Cristol'southward name appears as A. Jay Cristol.

On the government hosted website which gives Judge Cristol'southward contact information, the name also appears as A. Jay Cristol.

What does the "A" correspond, and why would Mr. Cristol non wnat to share this information with the public? Would the origins of Mr. Cristol's first proper noun shed some light on his views regarding the Liberty?

i like this country a lot, i think its really nice...
plz due east post me if u have whatever ideas or comments about the country:):):)

Gus Moner - 8/28/2002

Whence did Mr. Cristol get any data proving that the Pres. Wilson involve himself in the Balfour Announcement? Nowhere in whatever inquiry that I take read has such a link ever been established.

The preposterous assertion that no help to the new Zionist state of Israel came from the US sources and only some desultory aid got through is an insult to anyone's intelligence. With the vast Jewish banking network, from the Rothschild on down (yes, Mr. Cristol, the aforementioned people as those involved in the financing of the UK during WWI that obtained in exchange the Balfour Declaration) Israel was handsomely funded past the US and other nations.

I could go along dissecting this commodity, notwithstanding it seems unworthy of whatever further assay. Surely we cannot continue to exist subjected to such inaccuracies if the people running this web folio content pretend it to exist taken seriously.

Asaf Golan - 6/ii/2002

Unfortunately the biggest omision in the otherwise wonderful article was that the Transjordan or Eastern Palestine was originally a office of the country promised to the Jews by the League of Nations.

Duby Diggs - v/30/2002

I hold that Cristol'south piece is informative and succinctly written, as far as it goes -which is through nigh 1970.

But (and it's not a small but), a few of import changes accept occurred within the U.s.-Israel relationship over the by three decades. Main amid these is the abuse of American support by "Likud" governments, which, through their destructive policy of "settlements", have perverted the original thrust of Zionism, warping it away from peace and security, and towards expansionism. Some twenty-four hour period, it can exist hoped, America will wake upwards to this abuse and the hiding thereof (wittingly or otherwise) by commentators such as Cristol.

Spiff - 5/thirty/2002

A dandy piece, merely Cristol writes through rose-colored glasses here:

"President Harry Truman, with the urging of his executive assistant, Clark Clifford, acted considering he felt "it was the right affair to exercise." The Soviet motive was less altruistic. Considering the government of Israel was controlled past the Labor Party, the Soviets believed State of israel would become part of the Soviet Bloc and provide a Soviet entree into the Middle Due east."

Who's to say that the motives of the U.S. were more donating than those of the Soviets? Although Truman *said* he did it because "information technology was the right affair to do," I'll bet our motives were just as self-serving every bit the Soviet's motives, i.due east., that nosotros recognised Israel for the exact same reason the Soviets did, namely to get the Israelis on *our* side.

Subsequently all, this was in the center of the Cold War, when almost every foreign policy decision of the U.S. was fabricated with the intent of countering every Soviet motion, of responding, tit for tat, to every Soviet action, of badly trying to line up as many friends (notice I didn't say "allies"!) throughout the world in grooming for the ultimate showdown with the Evil Empire.

This is the most denoting, succinct, and full business relationship I've seen of the 50 years of U.Due south/State of israel history -- in less than one folio. Quite a fit! The only omission is 1 of import sentence that was left out between successive paragraphs (a) and (b):

(a). "Following World War II and the Holocaust, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 181 on November 29, 1947, which devised a plan to segmentation the British mandate of Palestine. The Jewish community of Palestine accustomed the plan, but the Arabs rejected it. Britain withdrew from mandatory Palestine on May 14, 1948, and Israel declared itself a Country."

(b). "The 1948 War of Independence established the state of State of israel."

The missing sentence between (a) and (b) is:

The mean solar day afterward, on May fifteen, 1948, the armies of vii Arab countries invaded
the newly born country and the War of Independence began.
